Exhibit Commemorates Native-American Heritage Month

November is Native-American Heritage Month and the Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) is recognizing this with a special display “Chief Standing Bear: Taking a Stand” on loan from the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska. The display was created by Patrick Kopke of Hastings, who won the State Chief Standing Bear Day essay contest in 2006 with his speech and exhibit.

In 1977, Chief Standing Bear was elected to the Nebraska Hall of Fame at the Capitol in Lincoln because of his dedication to the Ponca Tribe, his hard work and courage to be recognized as a United States citizen, and all Native Americans to have rights as human beings. The bust of Chief Standing Bear is located in the Hall of Fame and on permanent display for all to see and appreciate.

In 1998, Chief Standing Bear was once again honored by having the Chief Standing Bear Memorial Bridge located between Nebraska and South Dakota named in his honor. It is a beautiful landmark that spans the Missouri River near Niobrara.

Visitors are welcome to stop in to see the exhibit any time during regular office hours from 8 to 4:30 Monday through Friday at the office located at 702 E Park Ave. located on East Highway 20.
